a simple lifestyle blog
Here’s what I did this week:
*runs away awkwardly*
Theodore (Joaquin Phoenix, Walk the Line / Inherent Vice) is recovering from his failed marriage when he sets up a new operating system on his computer and delves into the vastness of his new artificially intelligent companion, Samantha (voiced by Scarlett Johansson, He’s Just Not That Into You / Lost in Translation). The two grow closer as they spend their days learning from each other and uncovering the intricacies of human nature and relationships.
The film took home the top prize for best original screenplay at the 2014 Academy Awards. Spike Jonze, the film’s writer and director, got his start by making skate videos back in the day and has come a long way since his Jackass days. Her is beautiful in its understated and subtle commentary on some of the greatest pitfalls in our relationships with family and loved ones. On more than one occasion, I found myself reaching for a pen and paper to jot down a particularly poignant point to be used as a series of future mantras for myself.
Here are some of my favorite moments:
“Sometimes I think I have felt everything I’m ever gonna feel. And from here on out, I’m not gonna feel anything new. Just lesser versions of what I’ve already felt.”
“The heart is not like a box that gets filled up; it expands in size the more you love.”
“I caught myself thinking about it over and over. And then I realized that I was simply remembering it as something that was wrong with me. That was the story I was telling myself – that I was somehow inferior. Isn’t that interesting? The past is just a story we tell ourselves.”
TUNES: “Nothing Compares 2 U” by Chris Cornell
Okay, we all remember the Sinead O’Connor version of this song, yes?
Chris Cornell, of Soundgarden (Remember “Black Hole Sun”?), covered this 90’s ballad earlier this week and it has been on repeat around here.
I honestly didn’t think I could love any 90’s tune more than I already do, but I think I may prefer Chris Cornell’s growly/grungy voice to my sweet, sweet Sinead’s waifish purr.
Check out this 90’s throwback and let me know what you think!
Sinead or Chris?
I ❤ the 90’s, man.
EATS: Easy Pumpkin Streusel Coffee Cake
Let me break this down for you:
The cake part of this coffee cake is just spice cake mix and pumpkin. THAT’S IT!
And then of course there’s the streusel topping which only has the best things in it; brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, etc. You know.
You really need to try out this recipe from The Seasoned Mom for an AMAZING fall treat that’s perfect for breakfast alongside a nice cup of coffee or as a dessert at any point during the day.
Get the recipe here!
Until next week, cheers!
