a simple lifestyle blog
Thursdays always feel like my day to catch up on life.
If I’m lucky, this means putting away clean laundry and scrubbing down the kitchen and bathroom.
“I love my life… I love my life… I love my life…”
Though after this week, life will be infinitely more balanced when my better half will no longer be in classes four nights a week and doing homework every spare second he has.
Chores? Tag! You’re it, pal!
I know what you’re thinking. “That’s one lucky fella, right there.”
But really, I’m just glad to finally get to, you know, see him. 🙂
FLICKS: A Series of Unfortunate Events
Liam Aiken (Stepmom / Road to Perdition) and Emily Browning (Sucker Punch / Pompeii) play brother and sister duo Klaus and Violet Baudelaire who, along with their baby sister, are mourning the tragic death of their parents to a mysterious fire. The children must band together to overcome their outlandishly ruthless guardian (Jim Carrey, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind / Dumb and Dumber) in his quest for their inheritance. The film is based on the children’s series of the same name by Daniel Handler (a.k.a. Lemony Snicket).
You cannot tell me that the music in this trailer does not bring to mind the great Tim Burton. Eh, eh?? Its fitting because the stylized set direction and costumes along with the ambiguous location and time period lend themselves to a Burton-esque quality about the film.
I have vivid memories of reading these books as a child and enjoying every second of it. The film is erroneously underrated for the number of hilarious black comedy moments not to mention the unexpectedly high-profile cast (Jude Law, Catherine O’Hara, Meryl Streep, Dustin Hoffman, Timothy Spall, etc).
It was directed by Brad Silberling who also directed Casper (with Bill Pullman and Christina Ricci) AND City of Angels (with Nicholas Cage and Meg Ryan), which is pretty much the most eclectic filmography I have ever seen.
If you aren’t sold on the idea that this film is just really entertaining to watch, you’ll be happy to know that it had some profound moments of note:
“At times the world can seem an unfriendly and sinister place, but believe us when we say that there is much more good in it than bad. All you have to do is look hard enough. And what might seem to be a series of unfortunate events may, in fact, be the first steps of a journey.”
The Killers! Remember them??
Anyone else mistakenly think they were British because of how they sing their A’s? Anyone? Anyone? Just me? Okay.
The guy who really put the band together, lead vocalist Brandon Flowers, realized after being dumped by his former band and attending an Oasis concert (lucky!) that he needed to find bandmates who were more his speed. Boy, did he and now we thank him daily for forming the Killers.
