Sole Cleaner & Deodorizer

Confession: I used to wear tennis shoes without socks as my primary footwear as a kid.
My mom always warned against it.
“You’ll never be able to get the stink out,” she’d say.
Did I listen?

Just one of the many examples of moms having more life experience than their 8-year-old’s.
So I lived a life of stinky feet until I moved to the chilly Northwest and discovered a passionate desire and need for some badass, leather boots.

The best part about my beautiful oxblood Dr. Marten’s was that I was forced, nay compelled, to wear socks every day I wore them (a.k.a. every single day).

Here’s the thing: its too flingin-flangin hot in summer to wear thick wool socks and leather boots.

So now, I have transitioned to wearing these impossibly cute flats that my aforementioned brilliant mother bought for me in anticipation of my summer needs and, wouldn’t you know it, the soles are already embarrassingly dirty and consequently, my feet (and my husband) have suffered.

THIS HAS TO STOP.

Here’s what you’ll need:
an old toothbrush (or a new one that will never see the inside of a mouth, yuck.)
non-gel toothpaste
rubbing alcohol
cotton swabs

Here’s what you’ll do:
1. Spread a thin layer of non-gel toothpaste on your brush and start vigorously brushing throughout the sole.
2. Rinse the toothbrush every so often and reapply toothpaste as needed and continue to brush until the entire sole has been scrubbed.
3. Soak a cotton ball in rubbing alcohol and rub throughout the sole. Swap out for a clean, soaked cotton ball as needed. This may take a few passes through before your shoe comes out clean depending on the extent of your filth. *cough cough* four times
4. Allow your shoes to air-dry before wearing.

Not only does this process cleanse the soul/sole (see what I did there??), it knocks out those nasty odors that we all hope no one else can smell except ourselves without using those questionable aerosol sprays.

Until next time, cheers!

Good idea! Also, for in-between times, just wad up some newspaper and stick it in the shoes overnight. It won’t clean the soles but will draw out the stink.
