The Most Useful Essential Oils to Always Have on Hand

Greetings, friends!

I realized after doing last week’s post on everything you need to know about oils, that I could easily do a separate post on essential oils for all there is to know about them.
Those little buggers are fascinating!

uh yeahI’m going to cover the top 4 essential oils that you will definitely want to keep around and how they can help improve your home.

Top 4 Essential Oils:

– Soothes mosquito bites & bee stings: just dab a single drop directly to affected area to relieve inflammation
– Relieves Anxiety: you are actually allowed to huff this stuff for your well-being. ~~*SCIENCE*~~
– Homemade deodorant: such as this little recipe here by yours truly
– Eases headaches: just a few drops on the back of your neck, behind your ears, on your temples/forehead and under your nose should ease a headache
– Heals cold sores and other skin irritations: apply a drop directly on any skin reaction
– Anti-itch cream: combine with coconut oil to create a balm that will relieve itching caused by sunburn and other skin irritations
– Reduces allergy symptoms: diffuse or directly ingest a few drops
– Cure acne: apply one drop nightly to pimples, should clear up in 2-3 days
– Combats insomnia:

– Pet stain deodorizer: sprinkle area liberally with baking soda and then sprinkle lavender oil on top, leave overnight (with plate laying face down over area to keep children and pets from playing in it) and vacuum up the next morning
– Body lotion: such as this little recipe here by yours truly
– Facial toner: combine with apple cider vinegar for pH balancing toner (as seen on Don’t Mess with Mama)

– DIY liquid dishwasher detergent: combine with water, castile soap and lemon juice (as seen on Ellie Moon)
– Detox: drink 8oz of water with 1 drop of lemon oil once every morning to expel harmful toxins
– Sharpens concentration: drinking 8oz of water with 3 drops of lemon oil helps wake up the neurons
– Laundry refresher: add 3-5 drops to your load if you accidentally left the wet clothes in the washer too long
– Soothes a sore throat: add a few drops to hot tea along with honey for taste and added antiseptic power 
– Eases congestion: drink a big glass of water with 2 drops lemon oil and rub a couple drops to bottom of feet and chest along with carrier oil (e.g. coconut oil) for fast relief
– DIY cleaning products: such as these DIY All-Purpose wipes by yours truly ALSO mix 1 cup of vinegar, 10 drops of lemon oil, and 2-4 cups of water in a spray bottle for an effective, all-purpose cleansing spray
– Stainless Steel Cleaner: mix equal parts water and vinegar with 1 drop lemon oil/dish soap per 1 oz of liquid for a shimmering shine on sinks and appliances (as seen on The Thrifty Couple)
– Wood polish: 2-3 drops in 1/2 cup of EVOO creates a chemical-free solution to dried out wood furniture
– Disinfect Your Cutting Board: a few drops rubbed into your cutting board will help preserve and deodorize it
– Get gum out of your hair: a couple drops will help loosen up the sticky mess
– Heartburn relief: drinking water with 1 drop of lemon oil will diffuse the acid that causes heartburn

– Soothes an upset tummy: just rub a couple drops on your sad tummy to turn that frown upside down
– Fever reducer: 1-2 drops rubbed on the bottom of your feet can help reduce a fever
– Facial Toner: 1 Tbsp honey + one and  1/3 c water + 1/4 c apple cider vinegar + 5 drops peppermint oil = amazing acne control (as seen on Grow, Pray, Build)
– Freshens Breath: head over to Butter Nutrition for this easy mouthwash DIY
– Bath Soak: combine with Epsom salt, sea salt, green tea leaves and coconut oil for an invigorating detox bath (as seen on Adventures in Coupons)
– Soft lip scrub: head over to Sarah di Grazia for this simple lip scrub that’s sure to soften your lips
lip scrub– Relieves muscle pain: combine 1 Tbsp of coconut oil with 10 drops peppermint oil and rub on sore muscles
– DIY toothpaste: 3 Tbsp baking soda + 3 Tbsp coconut oil + 2 tsp Hydrogen peroxide + 1-2 drops peppermint oil = minty fresh toothpaste (as seen on JJ Begonia)
– Relieves congestion: diffuse, apply topically to chest or add to a humidifier for fast relief
– Body lotion: such as this little recipe here by yours truly
– Eases headaches: a few drops of peppermint to your temples, the back of your neck or on your sinuses should do the trick
– Improves concentration: huff it. OR, for kids, you can dab a little on their tongue or under their nose to help get the blood flowing to the brain
– Relieves toothaches: just a drop of peppermint oil on your gums will help immensely (great all-natural remedy for teething too!)

Tea Tree
– Homemade neosporin- head over to PopSugar for this easy DIY boo-boo cream
– Facial moisturizer: coconut oil, vitamin E and tea tree oil is all you need to keep your face looking fly (as seen on Live Simply)
– Homemade dishwasher detergent: 1/2 c castile soap + 1/2 c water + 1/4 c white vinegar + 1 tsp lemon juice + 3 drops tea tree oil = shiny dishes all the live long day (2 Tbsp per load, as seen on A Foothill Home Companion)
– Shower Cleaner: a small spray bottle with 1-2 tsp tea tree oil and the rest of the way filled with water is good to have on hand so you can spray down your shower after each use to prevent scum buildup leaving your shower fresh and clean
– Toilet cleaner: a little baking soda, white vinegar and tea tree oil will help deodorize and disinfect your porcelain throne
– Prevents lice: just add a few drops to your shampoo
– Wards off fleas: a few drops in Lassie’s bed or crate will keep him itch-free
– Relieves asthma: simply add a few drops to your humidifier

Can you even imagine if I had done more than 4 essential oils?
